ELEMENTARY MUSIC PROGRAM

Hello St. Clairsville Elementary Families:

My name is Eric Trio, and I have the privilege of being your child’s music teacher. I strongly believe that all children are capable of making music (in its many forms) which can bring them joy, develop their creativity, express their emotions, develop their critical thinking skills, develop their collaborative skills with their peers, and so much more in their development as children.

The music curriculum at St. Clairsville Elementary utilizes the approach to teaching and learning music known as Orff-Schulwerk (German for “school work”) and follows the guidelines set forth by the Ohio State Music Standards. This approach was developed by German composer Carl Orff (1895-1982) and colleague Gunild Keetman (1904-1990). Orff-Schulwerk is a total, active involvement in music-making that incorporates speech, singing, movement, and instrument playing in a creative environment. It develops the whole child with a balance of emotional and intellectual stimulation.

A variety of instruments are used in music class: barred instruments (xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels), hand-held percussion instruments, African drums, and more!  In the third and fourth grades, the recorder is another instrument used in the classroom. Through the use of these instruments, students will learn how to improvise and compose their own music at a very young age. This is all done through a child’s natural sense of play. The teacher guides, the child creates, and the entire time learning is taking place.

I encourage you to follow my music teacher's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/eric.trio.12 This is a place where I will occasionally share photos and/or videos from time to time throughout the school year from student compositions, performances, etc. (students with no authorization for a photo/video release on FinalForms will not be posted).

If you ever have any questions about your child’s music education, please do not hesitate to contact me using my email contact below. Thank you for your support of music education at St. Clairsville Elementary School!

Musically,

Eric Trio
